Unlike a chair, an idea can be shared by a whole people. The time is right for alternative economics, reduced working hours, redefining work, security, health and happiness, person-oriented work, labor-intensive investment (not capital-intensive investments) and soft power. The only way to solve the three crises of mass unemployment,m environment destruction and trade imbalance is to move from quantitative to qualitative growth (cf. Hans-Christoph Binswanger). Access could replace excess as enou9gh could replace more. Possessions possess us more than we possess them. The car is more than a metal box but is a whole way of thinking encouraging domination, narcissism, solipsism and self-righteousness. Consumerism goes through the roof, not population. We have enough for everyone's need, not for everyone's greed (cf. Gandhi). The dialogue "Surviving Utopia" with Elmar Altvater and Raul Zelik intimates the wonders and obstacles to utopian thinking. Utopia, the place of no-place, is more a goal and objective than a concrete reality. Economics changes with the times. Once savings was the elixirr and then spending became the elixir. States are different than Swabian housewives. They can become indebted and invest and safeguard their future. What is rational from a microeconomic perspective can be destructive from a macroeconomic perspective. Increasing competitiveness is sensible for an individual corporation or businessperson but may be disastrous if all countries reduce their workforces. Wages are both costs and demand or purchasing power. Neoliberal myths and assumptions give unbounded freedom to capital while demeaning labor as only an inevitable cost. The articles "Learning from History," "Community Centers in O Canada," "Nature as Healer and Teacher," "Cinderella's Sisters and King Midas" and "Shouting from the Caboose" are invitations to ecological, sustainable, respectful and future-oriented change. "We must be wounded to be healed," Dorothee Soelle said. Have we been sufficiently wounded by materialism, imperial hubris, the financial crisis, deregulation, commodification, instrumental rationality, suburbanization and the work religion? In "Surveying Utopia," the emeritus professor Elmar Altvater shares the Polish proverb: You can make fish soup out of an aquarium but you can't make an aquarium out of fish soup. The future should be anticipated and protected in the present, not extrapolated from the present. The future could be full of community centers, free Internet books and soft power if we become active subjects and not passive objects, enthralled in the present and future like children. "Utopia" ist der Titel eines 1516 von Thomas Morus in lateinischer Sprache verfassten philosophischen Dialogs. Die Schilderung einer fernen "idealen" Gesellschaft gab den Anstoß zum Genre der Sozialutopie. Die Erstveröffentlichung geschah auf Betreiben des berühmten Humanisten Erasmus von Rotterdam 1516 in Löwen, weitere Drucke folgten 1517 in Paris und 1518 in Basel. Die erste deutsche Übersetzung – unter dem Titel "Von der wunderbarlichen Innsul Utopia genannt, das andere Buch" – erschien 1524. Rahmenhandlung sind die Erzählungen eines Seemannes, der eine Zeit lang bei den Utopiern gelebt haben will. Der Roman beschreibt eine auf rationalen Gleichheitsgrundsätzen, Arbeitsamkeit und dem Streben nach Bildung basierende Gesellschaft mit demokratischen Grundzügen. In der Republik ist aller Besitz gemeinschaftlich, Anwälte sind unbekannt, und unabwendbare Kriege werden bevorzugt mit ausländischen Söldnern geführt. Das Buch war so prägend, dass man fortan jeden Roman, in dem eine erfundene, positive Gesellschaft dargestellt wird, als Utopie oder utopischen Roman bezeichnete. Bedeutende Utopien nach "Utopia" waren "A Modern Utopia" von H. G. Wells, "Ecotopia" von Ernest Callenbach und "Island" von Aldous Huxley. Utopia is a work of fiction and political philosophy by Thomas More. The book is a frame narrative primarily depicting a fictional island society and its religious, social and political customs. There is no private property on Utopia, with goods being stored in warehouses and people requesting what they need. There are also no locks on the doors of the houses, which are rotated between the citizens every ten years. Agriculture is the most important job on the island. Every person is taught it and must live in the countryside, farming for two years at a time, with women doing the same work as men. Parallel to this, every citizen must learn at least one of the other essential trades: weaving (mainly done by the women), carpentry, metalsmithing and masonry. There is deliberate simplicity about these trades; for instance, all people wear the same types of simple clothes and there are no dressmakers making fine apparel. All able-bodied citizens must work; thus unemployment is eradicated, and the length of the working day can be minimised: the people only have to work six hours a day (although many willingly work for longer). More does allow scholars in his society to become the ruling officials or priests, people picked during their primary education for their ability to learn. All other citizens are however encouraged to apply themselves to learning in their leisure time. Slavery is a feature of Utopian life and it is reported that every household has two slaves. The slaves are either from other countries or are the Utopian criminals. These criminals are weighed down with chains made out of gold. The gold is part of the community wealth of the country, and fettering criminals with it or using it for shameful things like chamber pots gives the citizens a healthy dislike of it. It also makes it difficult to steal as it is in plain view. The wealth, though, is of little importance and is only good for buying commodities from foreign nations or bribing these nations to fight each other. Slaves are periodically released for good behaviour. Jewels are worn by children, who finally give them up as they mature. Other significant innovations of Utopia include: a welfare state with free hospitals, euthanasia permissible by the state, priests being allowed to marry, divorce permitted, premarital sex punished by a lifetime of enforced celibacy and adultery being punished by enslavement. Meals are taken in community dining halls and the job of feeding the population is given to a different household in turn. Although all are fed the same, Raphael explains that the old and the administrators are given the best of the food. Travel on the island is only permitted with an internal passport and any people found without a passport are, on a first occasion, returned in disgrace, but after a second offence they are placed in slavery. Der Mensch als Bezugsgröße. Einheiten interagieren, gestalten einen Raum nach Vorgabe, welche dieser selbst festlegt. Hier entsteht nichts Neues. Der Mensch als Element. Als abstrakte Schnittmenge aller Menschen betrachtet, wird er zur Bedürftigkeit. Sein Raum ist jener der Bedürfnisbefriedigung mit wachsender Entsprechung. Dem Abstrakten kann nie vollkommen entsprochen werden. Der Mensch als Individuum. Der Einzige selbst, ist seine eigene Vorgabe. In seiner Interaktion mit Menschen innerhalb des Raumes erkennt er sich selbst. Individuell macht einen Menschen das, was er mit der Schnittmenge nicht gemein hat, sein Potential. Der Mensch als Visionär. Potential ist im Gegensatz zur Gemeinsamkeit, der Schnittmenge, dem Bedürfnis passiv nicht erlebbar. Es muss zu Ausdruck gebracht werden, damit es für den Einzelnen greifbar wird und entwickelt werden kann. Nur so kann ein Neues entstehen, welches den Menschen als Individuum berücksichtigt und fähig ist, seinen Raum tatsächlich weiter zu entwickeln. [more]
