Benjamin Franklin Norris, Jr. (March 5, 1870 – October 25, 1902) was an American novelist during the Progressive Era, writing predominantly in the naturalist genre.[1][2][3][4][5] His notable works include McTeague (1899), The Octopus: A Story of California (1901), and The Pit (1903).
Frank Norris was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1870.[6] His father, Benjamin, was a self-made Chicago businessman and his mother, Gertrude Glorvina Doggett, had a stage career. In 1884 the family moved to San Francisco where Benjamin went into real estate. In 1887, after the death of his brother and a brief stay in London, young Norris went to Académie Julian in Paris where he studied painting for two years and was exposed to the naturalist novels of Émile Zola.[7][8] Between 1890 and 1894 he attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he picked up the ideas of human evolution of Darwin and Spencer that are reflected in his later writings. His stories appeared in the undergraduate magazine at Berkeley and in the San Francisco Wave. After his parents' divorce he went east and spent a year in the English Department of Harvard University. There he came under the influence of Lewis E. Gates, who encouraged his writing. He worked as a news correspondent in South Africa (1895–96) for the San Francisco Chronicle, and then as editorial assistant on the San Francisco Wave (1896–97). He worked for McClure's Magazine as a war correspondent in Cuba during the Spanish–American War in 1898. He joined the New York City publishing firm of Doubleday & Page in 1899. [more]

Fabre went on to accomplish many scholarly achievements. He was a popular teacher, physicist, chemist and botanist. However, he is probably best known for his findings in the field of entomology, the study of insects, and is considered by many to be the father of modern entomology. Much of his enduring popularity is due to his marvelous teaching ability and his manner of writing about the lives of insects in biographical form, which he preferred to a clinically detached, journalistic mode of recording. In doing so he combined what he called "my passion for scientific truth" with keen observations and an engaging, colloquial style of writing. Fabre noted:
Others again have reproached me with my style, which has not the solemnity, nay, better, the dryness of the schools. They fear lest a page that is read without fatigue should not always be the expression of the truth. Were I to take their word for it, we are profound only on condition of being obscure.
Over the years he wrote a series of texts on insects and arachnids that are collectively known as the Souvenirs Entomologiques. Fabre's influence is felt in the later works of fellow naturalist Charles Darwin, who called Fabre "an inimitable observer". Fabre, however,was a Christian who remained sceptical about Darwin's theory of evolution, as he always held back from all theories and systems. His special force was exact and detailed observation, field research as we would call it today, always avoiding premature general conclusions from his observations.
In one of Fabre's most famous experiments, he arranged Pine Processionary caterpillars to form a continuous loop around the edge of a pot. As each caterpillar instinctively followed the silken trail of the caterpillars in front of it, the group moved around in a circle for seven days.[2]
Jean-Henri Fabre's last home and office, the Harmas de Fabre in Provence, stands today as a museum devoted to his life and works.
The site of his birth, at St Léons, near Millau is now the site of Micropolis, a tourist attraction dedicated to popularising entomology and a museum on his life. [more]

Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (German: [ˈhɛkəl]; February 16, 1834 – August 9, 1919[1]) was a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor, and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including anthropogeny, ecology, phylum, phylogeny, stem cell, and the kingdom Protista. Haeckel promoted and popularized Charles Darwin's work in Germany and developed the controversial recapitulation theory ("ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny") claiming that an individual organism's biological development, or ontogeny, parallels and summarizes its species' evolutionary development, or phylogeny.
The published artwork of Haeckel includes over 100 detailed, multi-colour illustrations of animals and sea creatures (see: Kunstformen der Natur, "Art Forms of Nature"). As a philosopher, Ernst Haeckel wrote Die Welträtsel (1895–1899, in English, The Riddle of the Universe, 1901), the genesis for the term "world riddle" (Welträtsel); and Freedom in Science and Teaching[2] to support teaching evolution.
Born in Saltoun, East Lothian, he taught at the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College from 1893 until 1899 then University of Aberdeen from 1899 until 1930, the year he was knighted. His popular works sought to reconcile science and religion. Thomson's Outline of Science, published in 1922, sold more than one hundred thousand copies in five years.[3]

In his Gifford lectures and a number of books written with his friend Patrick Geddes he argued for a form of holistic biology in which the activity of the living organism could transcend the physical laws governing its component parts.[4][5] Some had termed the work of Geddes and Thomson as neovitalist though the position presented in their books is more closer to panpsychism as Thomson had claimed that mind can not emerge from matter and that it has existed in nature all the time. Thomson had believed there was life at all levels, he wrote that "there is nothing inanimate". He had however found the vitalist ideas of Henri Bergson inspirational.

Weismann became the Director of the Zoological Institute and the first Professor of Zoology at Freiburg.

A group of pseudo scientists assemble to devise a revolutionary experiment that could change the concept of creation and evolution of species. The experiment would create the bases of a sudden transformation of a dog into a man. The scientists discuss issues that may concern such transformation from a dog into a man such as feeding, sex habits, and bathroom routines. Freud, Darwin and God are cited copiously to support such a sudden metamorphosis. At the end of the convention the scientists are preparing manuals to be used by people that would like to transform their dog into a man. Bruce and Estelle, the owners of a German shepherd dog, named Rex are some of the dog masters that receive those manuals by mail. They find out that Rex’s dream is in fact to become a superman. Bruce and Estelle transform their backyard into a classroom; the table is full of books ready for reading and two posters depicting a dog male and a dog female anatomy on the back wall. They begin teaching Rex elementary things such as vocabulary, numbers, sexual behavior and manly attitude towards women. Estelle especially spends time showing Rex her body, letting him touch her breasts, and all. Bruce and Estelle also discuss other topics such as the history of humanity, time, religion, sins, and facts of life. What started as a routine class following the “scientific” manuals becomes slowly a hodge-podge of useful teaching coupled with “information waste”. Estelle talks of a possibility to see one day her mom pass by and find out that Rex is not anymore a dog. At that stage Rex has enough knowledge to stop listening to his two tutors and become involved in expressing original ideas and also declare openly his love for Estelle, which infuriates Bruce. During the lessons Rex’s appearance changes slowly into a man. Almost at the end of this transformation process a woman wearing circus like huge prosthetic legs approaches the three protagonists. She tells them that their attempt to transform a dog into a man is illegal and threatens to report them to the police. Bruce and Estelle ignore her. Only Rex becomes apprehensive that police may end his dream to become a full-fledged man. As physical transformation of Rex into a man becomes obvious, Estelle asks him to change his “fur coat” with a cardigan she knitted meanwhile. As expected, Estelle’s mom comes by one day and is pleasantly surprised by Rex’s transformation into a gentleman though she finds Rex’s declared passion for Estelle very disturbing. She runs out of the courtyard into the house with the pretext of taking a nap. Not long after that a group made out of four policemen and a priest and exhibiting a sturm-und-drang behavior push through the door and demand explanations about “the metamorphosis situation”. The priest is the one that reads the bible paragraphs that describe the human-dog coitus as being a forbidden sin. A “Scientific” policeman inquires about Bruce’s qualification to transform dogs into men. [more]
