The history of India begins with evidence of human activity of Homo sapiens, as long as 75,000 years ago, or with earlier hominids including Homo erectus from about 500,000 years ago.[1] The Indus Valley Civilization, which spread and flourished in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent from c. 3300 to 1300 BCE in present-day Pakistan and northwest India, was the first major civilization in South Asia.[2] A sophisticated and technologically advanced urban culture developed in the Mature Harappan period, from 2600 to 1900 BCE.[3] This civilization collapsed at the start of the second millennium BCE and was later followed by the Iron Age Vedic Civilization, which extended over much of the Indo-Gangetic plain and which witness the rise of major polities known as the Mahajanapadas. Literature in Sanskrit begins with the spoken or sung literature of the Vedas c.3rd to 2nd millennium BCE (Bronze Age India, Indus Valley Civilization), and continues with the oral tradition of the Sanskrit Epics of Iron Age India; the golden age of Classical Sanskrit literature dates to late Antiquity (roughly the 2nd to 8th centuries CE). Indian literary production saw a late bloom in the 11th century before declining after 1100 CE, hastened by the Islamic conquest of India, due to the destruction of ancient seats of learning such as Taxila and Nalanda Univesity. Cyrus the Great, also known as Cyrus the Elder, was the founder of the Achaemenid Empire. Under his rule, the empire embraced all the previous civilized states of the ancient Near East,[9] expanded vastly and eventually conquered most of Southwest Asia and much of Central Asia and the Caucasus. From the Mediterranean Sea and Hellespont in the west to the Indus River in the east, Cyrus the Great created the largest empire the world had yet seen. His regal titles in full were The Great King, King of Persia, King of Anshan, King of Media, King of Babylon, King of Sumer and Akkad, and King of the Four Corners of the World. Aber plötzlich ist alles zu Ende. Als eine Krankheit ihn befällt, bietet der endlos Siegreiche ihr keinen Trotz. Sein Reich ist nicht von Bestand, es zerfällt in den Kämpfen seiner Nachfolger. Der Roman von Jakob Wassermann setzt ein beim Todesmarsch durch die Wüste. Über dessen glücklichen Ausgang freuen sich zwar die Soldaten, aber Alexander bleibt distanziert und nüchtern. Von der anschließenden Ankunft in Susa bis zu Alexanders Tod in Babylon wird dessen Leben dargestellt - begleitet von schwarzen mystischen Vorzeichen, an die Alexander nicht glauben will, aber die er nicht ignorieren kann. Die sind auch ein wichtiges Element der Handlung und dienen recht gut dazu den Verfall Alexanders darzustellen - seine Hybris wird auch dadurch bestraft. Neben dem Tod eines engen Vertrauten und die immer wieder auftauchenden Warnungen gerade in mystischer Hinsicht, seinem unberechtigt schwindenden Vertrauen auf seine makedonischen Soldaten sind das die Kernelemente die ihn zum Ende führen. Besonders interessant ist die Figur seines Halbbruders, der träumend es doch schafft sich immer mehr und mehr Alexander anzunähern und ihm die Drohung seines Endes darzustellen durch sein seltsames Verhalten. Schlussendlich stirbt Alexander - im Tod alleine und von Allen vor allem um eine Nachfolgeregelung bedrängt, die er nicht trifft. Weil er, in seiner Hybris, sich den Tod nicht vorzustellen vermag, aber dennoch nicht gegen den Eigenen ankämpft. [more]
