Henry Rider Haggard was born in West Bradenham Hall, Norfolk, the eight son of William Haggard, a barrister and a country squire, and Ella (Doventon) Haggard, an amateur writer. In his childhood, the young Henry Rider was seen as the family dunce by his father. Haggard was not sent to a good public school like his brothers, but he was educated at a London day-school, although privately, and Ipswich Grammar School. At eighteen he fell in love with Mary Elizabeth "Lilly" Jackson. She married a few years later Frank Archer, a banker who was caught in an embezzlement and deserted her.
After failing the army entrance, Haggard went in 1875 to Natal as a secretary to Sir Henry Bulwer, Governor of Natal colony. In he joined the staff of the special commissioner. Next year he became Master and Registrar of the High Court in the Transvaal. For the rest of his life Haggard viewed with understanding the British colonial policy, sharing in this the attitudes of his friend Rudyard Kipling. On the other hand, he also traveled widely and saw the dangers of European intrusion. Thus in the end of King Solomon's Mines Haggard left the lost land of the Kukuanas to continue its own separate development.
During his years in Africa, Haggard got acquainted with the Zulu culture. Especially he admired the individual prowess of their warriors: "When death comes, he meets it without fear, and goes to the spirits of his fathers boldly, as a warrior should." Although Haggard himself had been brought up to believe in the superiority of European culture and the Christian religion, he did not condemn the polygamic system of the Zulus, writing that "the Zulu women are much attached to the custom, nor would they as a general rule consent to marry a man who only proposed taking one wife." Haggard himself had an affair with a married woman, Johanna Catherine Ford (née Lehmkuhl); she gave birth to a child who died.
Psychoanalytic interpretations of Haggard's novels have paid much attention to his female characters. Among his devoted reader was Carl Jung, who used the novel She (1887) as an example of anima. According to Jung, the anima is an archetypical form, expressing the fact that a man has a minority of female genes. Haggard's Queen Ayesha is an unmistakable anima type – the ultimate guide and mediator to the inner world. The idea has also connections with the oservations of James Frazer in his classical study The Golden Bough. Also Haggard's idea of a journey into the "darkest Africa," which turns into a spiritual search, has been used my a number of writers, including Joseph Conrad in Heart of Darkness (1902). [more]

Alice in Wonderland has become a byword for the unreal and highly imaginative. It has inspired children, artists, writers, film producers and musicians worldwide. This quintessentially English story has gained global eminence. It is a perennial favourite popular across all ages and cultures. The image of a little blonde haired girl, dressed in a blue dress and white pinafore and hair caught back by band is instantly recognisable as Alice. Other characters too have developed recognisable identities of their own such as the White Rabbit complete with his pocket watch, the Mad Hatter, the Red Queen and the Playing Card soldiers. It is an amazing achievement for a quiet Oxford don who created the stories just to amuse a group of children.
Oxford will forever remain the key area associated with Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. It was here that the story was created on that hot day long ago, when Carroll took the Liddell children for a boat ride along the river. Yet there are many other locations that have a claim to fame, and possess connections to the Alice story.
Over the years, Carroll’s work has come under scrutiny. He has been variously described as a frustrated, unmarried clergyman, a talented photographer, a social historian offering insights into Victorian life, and a nonsense writer like Edward Lear, another Victorian writer.
Port Meadow is the location of the White Rabbit’s rabbit hole, while nearby is the dark wood ‘where things have no name’ as well as Godstow Lock where Alice first encountered a white rabbit with pink eyes who ran close by, muttering he was late. The treacle well and the pool of tears can also be found near Oxford, the city in which both Alice and Lewis Carroll made their home. Yet there are many other locations that have a claim to fame, and possess connections to the Alice story.
Lewis Carroll was born in Daresbury, Cheshire where the church has a beautiful stained glass window featuring the author and his characters. Down in Cornwall, Antony House was used as a setting for Tim Burton’s stunning film Alice in Wonderland, as did Charlestown harbour. While over in North Wales, the Liddell family had a holiday home in Llandudno and there are now special trails that can be followed.
This is the story of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell – the girl who became better known as Alice in Wonderland. The Cuckoo Clock, by Mary Louisa Molesworth, is a British children’s fantasy novel published in 1877.[1] A small child and a cuckoo for a cuckoo clock become unlikely friends, when at night the clock transports her to magical places.
A young girl (Griselda) is sent to live with her two older aunts (Miss Grizzel & Miss Tabitha.) The house is large but in the room where she completes her lessons there is a very elaborate cuckoo clock. During one of her lessons Griselda gets very mad, thinking the clock is mocking her, and throws a book at the Cuckoo. The clock stops working, and the two aunts are devastated. Even though the clock seems to be silent, Griselda still hears it calling to her at night. She then decides that if the Cuckoo comes back at all she will catch him. In the middle of the night she goes to observe the Cuckoo. She then apologizes. When she does apologize the cuckoo comes to life and starts to talk with Griselda. The next day the Cuckoo is fixed. The next night however, the Cuckoo is calling to her again. The cuckoo asks her where she would like to go, she immediately responds with Fairyland. The cuckoo interjects that too many children have been there and that she should choose somewhere else. He suggests The Land of the Nodding Mandarin. She agrees. They journey to the land, and venture to see a palace and they get to nod at the king of the land, himself. After their journey she awakes in her bedroom, but she is still wearing the shoes that she received from the Mandarin land. Griselda then comes down with a cold, and instead of journeying to a land Griselda gets to look at pictures. The cuckoo hums her to sleep and she then receives different visions of her relatives. She also learns that her Grandfather is the one who made the Cuckoo Clock.
One cold night the cuckoo comes to her room and invites her to join him in the garden. Confused, Griselda says no. She then realizes that it might not be the garden that is just outside. She then runs to the clock trying to convince the cuckoo that she would like to go. She turns around three times and opens her eyes to Butterfly-land. They are invited to a high banquet by the king and queen of the butterflies. She learns that the butterflies are very hard workers and they gift her with a bit of their fragrance.
Some time passes and the young girl can hear the Cuckoo calling again. This time the call is actually for another little boy, Master Phil. Master Phil is a little boy of five and is searching for the cuckoo. He happens upon Griselda, and they talk of the cuckoo. He wants to find the Cuckoo so that he will be taken to fairyland. Griselda offers to teach him all that she knows. They play for the rest of the day and then plan on meeting the next day as well. The both aunts are not happy that there was a boy on the grounds. I was just viewing some videos and one of the videos talked about women empowerment. Amen. I have been on the planet earth for almost 47 years now. Amen. And I have seen women raped beaten and this is including young female girls. Amen. I don't know of nothing else. Amen. If she goes to church the females are abused if they go to work or school they still get abused. Amen. I have seen this all my life. Amen. All I was told this much that God himself formed a male body because he is a male and he put himself inside that body through his own breath and man became a living soul. Amen. Mandell Creighton (/ˈmændəl ˈkraɪtən/; 5 July 1843 – 14 January 1901), was a British historian and a bishop of the Church of England. A scholar of the Renaissance papacy, Creighton was the first occupant of the Dixie Chair of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Cambridge, a professorship established around the time that history was emerging as an independent academic discipline. He was also the first editor of the English Historical Review, the oldest English language academic journal in the field of history. Creighton had a second career as a cleric in the Church of England. He served as a parish priest in Embleton, Northumberland and later, successively, as the Bishop of Peterborough and the Bishop of London. His moderation and worldliness drew praise from Queen Victoria and won notice from politicians. It was widely thought at the time that Creighton would have become the Archbishop of Canterbury had his early death, at age 57, not supervened.
Creighton's historical work received mixed reviews. He was praised for scrupulous even-handedness, but criticised for not taking a stand against historical excesses. For his part, he was firm in asserting that public figures be judged for their public acts, not private ones. His preference for the concrete to the abstract diffused through his writings on the Church of England. He believed that the church was uniquely shaped by its particular English circumstances, and advocated that it reflect the views and wishes of the English people.
Creighton was married to the author and future women's suffrage activist Louise Creighton, and the couple had seven children. Jeanne Louise Henriette Campan (née Genet; 6 October[1] 1752, Paris – 16 March 1822, Mantes) was a French educator, writer and lady-in-waiting. In the service of Marie Antoinette before and during the French Revolution, she was afterwards headmistress of the first "Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'honneur", as appointed by Napoleon in 1807.
Her father was the highest-ranking clerk in the foreign office (the ambassador Citizen Genet was her younger brother), and, although without fortune, placed her in the most cultivated society. By the age of fifteen she could speak English and Italian, and had gained so high a reputation for her academic accomplishments as to be appointed reader to Louis XV's daughters (Princesses Victoire, Sophie and Louise) in 1768, and lady-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette in 1770. She was a general favourite at court, and when in 1774 she bestowed her hand upon Monsieur Campan, son of the secretary of the royal cabinet, the king gave her an annuity of 5,000 livres as dowry. The marriage was unhappy and the couple separated in 1790. Madame Campan was made First Lady of the Bedchamber by Marie Antoinette in 1786; and she continued to attend on her until the storming of the Tuileries on 10 August 1792, in which she was forcibly separated from the queen. With her own house under attack on this occasion, Henriette sought asylum in the countryside.
She survived the dangers of the Terror, but after the 9th of Thermidor, finding herself almost penniless, and being thrown on her own resources by the illness of her spouse, Madame Campan determined to support herself by establishing a school at St Germain. The institution prospered, and was patronized by Hortense de Beauharnais, whose influence led to the appointment of Madame Campan as superintendent of the academy founded by Napoleon at Écouen for the education of the daughters and sisters of members of his Légion d'honneur in 1807. She held this post until it was abolished at the restoration of the Bourbons in 1814, when she retired to Mantes, where she spent the rest of her life amid the kind attentions of affectionate friends, but saddened by the loss of her only son, and by the calumnies circulated on account of her connexion with the Bonapartes.
Henriette Campan died in 1822, leaving valuable Memoirs of the Private Life of Marie Antoinette (published 1823 (posthumously), Paris, 3 vols.), subtitled To which are Added Personal Recollections Illustrative of the Reigns of Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI (French: Mémoires sur la vie privée de Marie Antoinette, suivis de souvenirs et anecdotes historiques sur les règnes de Louis XIV – XV); a treatise De l'Education des Femmes (pub. 1824); and one or two small didactic works, written in a clear and natural style.
