Cleopatra: Being an Account of the Fall and Vengeance of Harmachis is a novel written by the author H. Rider Haggard, the author of King Solomon's Mines and She.
The book was first printed in 1889.
The story is set in the Ptolemaic era of Ancient Egyptian history and revolves around the survival of a dynasty bloodline protected by the Priesthood of Isis. The main character Harmachis (the living descendant of the pharaoh's bloodline) is charged by the Priesthood to overthrow the supposed impostor Cleopatra, drive out the Romans and restore Egypt to its golden era.
As is the case with the majority of Haggard's works, the story draws heavily upon adventure and exotic concepts. The story, told from the point of view of the Egyptian priest Harmachis, is recounted in biblical language, being in the form of papyrus scrolls found in a tomb. Haggard's portrait of Cleopatra is quite stunning, revealing her wit, her treachery, and her overwhelming presence. All of the characters are mixtures of good and evil, and evoke both sympathy and loathing. While much of the material on ancient Egyptian ritual is overdone,[citation needed] the often brilliant dialogue and the fateful interactions between the principal characters make the book quite unforgettable in comparison to Haggard's better known but more conventional adventure novels. The character of Mark Antony, introduced in the later part of the book, is fleeting and lacks importance, though historically it seems that the book has some importance as the references made are based on facts about the romance between Cleopatra and Mark Antony and the fall of both from power.[citation needed] Cleopatra goes unrecognized in most discussions of Haggard—perhaps because of its stilted language. Boucher and McComas gave the novel a mixed review, saying that it combined "a not always believable portrait" of its title heroine with a "fascinating, wholly convincing" story line. [more]

Im Erzählband "Zu den Städten Kämpfern und Träumern" von Deniz Civan Kacan wird die Welt durch Zerreißproben und auseinanderbrechende Ordnungen gefährdet. Da ist die von einem Kriminalfall bedrohte Welt des Ladenbesitzers Brasser, der parallel zu den Ermittlungen zweier Polizeikommissare eine Pferderennbahn nahe der Großstadt aufsucht. Dort trifft er den Rechtswanwalt Mardini und schafft nur kurz Abstand zu den zerreißenden Vormonaten.
In "Gerichtsverhandlung im Saal 1876" wird wegen des Vorwurfs des Bankenbetrugs Anklage gegen einen angehenden Kaufmann erhoben, der sich zwischen Recht und Unrecht, Lügen und Loyalität wiederfindet.
In "Sie kämpfen für die Zivilisation" wird vom gemeinsamen Kampf der internationalen Allianz und unter anderem den Kämpfern Milani und Quebec für die Demokratie und gegen den IS-Fanatismus und Totalitarismus berichtet. An der Kriegsfront zwischen belagerten Städten und den Flüssen Euphrat und Tigris fangen sie zudem ein irres Gerücht auf, wonach eine ganze Kleinstadt mit all ihren verschiedenen Gruppierungen der ISIS-Terrormiliz beigetreten sei. Die in jener Kleinstadt in Heeren gedrillten Selbstmordattentäter seien nun bereit nach Europa und in den Rest der Welt aufzubrechen.
In "El Loco" wird von einem tragischen Rückkehrer aus dem Gefängnis erzählt, der den Sprung aus der kriminellen, alten Welt in den geordneten Alltag schaffen will.
In der Erzählung "Raubzüge" ereignet sich eine Serie von Gesetzesbrüchen und Kasinoüberfällen zwischen zwei deutschen Städten. Es drängen sich für zwei Freunde plötzlich und unmittelbar die Fragen nach Ordnung und Sicherheit in der eigenen, kleinen und großen Welt auf. Schließlich erzählt der Autor vom Aufbruch eines Paares an eine schöne, ehemalige Kriegsküste in Istrien, die nach Beziehungsschwierigkeiten und der latenten Bedrohung eines Dritten plötzlich als Zufluchtsstätte herhält.
In "Zwischen Himmel und Ozean" wird von einem notlandenden Flugzeug vor der Küste einer Großmacht berichtet. Fragen und Interpretationen zur Anti-IS-Politik, zum Schicksal und zu gegenwärtigen Themen der Moderne vermischen sich entlang der Minuten zwischen Leben und Tod.
In den sieben Erzählungen treffen die Gegensätze von Recht und Unrecht, Demokratie und Totalitarismus, Krieg, Frieden, Ordnung, Loyalität und Gewalt teils unversöhnlich aufeinander.
