George Wharton James (27 September 1858[1] – 1923) was a prolific popular lecturer, photographer and journalist, writing more than 40 books and many articles and pamphlets on California and the American Southwest.James was born in Lincolnshire, England. He was ordained as a Methodist minister and came to the United States in 1881, serving in parishes in Nevada and southern California. However, in 1889 he was sued for divorce, accused by his wife with committing numerous acts of adultery. He subsequently underwent an ecclesiastical trial, charged with real estate fraud, using faked credentials, and sexual misconduct. He was defrocked, although he was later reinstated. He had a long-running feud with Charles Fletcher Lummis, another writer with similar regional interests. [more]

Caroline Hawley (born 1967, Nigeria) is a British journalist who has been a Special Correspondent for the BBC News channel since 2007.[1]
Hawley is a daughter of British diplomat Sir Donald Hawley.[2] She was educated at Wycombe Abbey School, an independent school for girls in High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, followed by Oxford University where she studied Arabic and Persian.
Hawley began her career in journalism on Newsweek as the magazine's Jerusalem correspondent from 1991 to 1994.[1] She joined the BBC in 1994 working for the World Service as a newsroom journalist, before being posted to Cairo in 1999 and Jordan around 2001.[3] While the BBC's Baghdad correspondent, she was expelled from Iraq in 2002, but returned to the country after Saddam Hussein was removed from power the following year. She was appointed the BBC Middle East correspondent at the beginning of 2006.
In recent years she has reported on stories for the BBC's Newsnight programme including an investigation into the sale of fake bomb detectors such as the ADE651 and GT200 to Iraq and other countries. That investigation led to a ban on UK exports of fake bomb detectors to Iraq and Afghanistan. On 23 April 2013, Jim McCormick, the founder of the company which made the ADE651, was convicted of three counts of fraud at the Old Bailey in London,and was subsequently sentenced to ten years' imprisonment.[4] The owner of the company which made the GT200, Gary Bolton, was also convicted on 26 July 2013 on two charges of fraud and subsequently jailed for seven years.[5][6] [more]

When it comes to construction development, one of the most important factors is the construction equipment that will be used for building.
Due to the rising rate of construction projects, it is not surprising that investors and entrepreneurs would like to venture into this type of industry. However, it has also become a way for people working behind some scam to use it as their ploy to extort money.
Firms and lawyers who have fallen victim have filed their complaint to stop this fraud business scheme. The crooks behind the scam use a construction machine purchase to get the attention of firms. Recently, a Nova Scotia firm has been a victim of the said purchase scam. As part of their fraud scheme, they send an email inquiring the firm to handle a Professional Services Agreement (PSA) for the equipment they are about to sell. The person who contacted the firms used actual names and details to pretend as a member of legitimate companies.
Avoiding scams
Purchase scam for construction equipment is one of the types of scam attempts that has become extremely common nowadays. Scammers send out thousands of versions of their email and use hundreds of registered company names and active lawyer or broker names to conceal their true identities and bad motives.
To give an air of legitimacy, they use online directories to get the contact details of the valid companies they mention in their emails. They even attach bogus electronic supporting documents such as Guarantor form and personal IDs to look genuine and also to increase their chances of getting noticed.
Before a trust account is debited, the people behind the fraud transaction send the victims with bogus cheques and trick them into performing proper verification processes. To ensure that anyone doesn’t become a victim of the purchase scam, it is better to review and verify all the details sent out by the potential client. No need to rush and just take your time in checking the necessary details and requirements. It can be a red flag if a seller refuses to show the equipment and attempts to route all transactions through a third-party payer. In case the transaction proceeds, ask for bank account information and other details that can help in verifying the client’s company authenticity.
A lot of scammers are trying to take advantage of different firms in western countries like USA and Canada. They have fallen victims to this scam and it’s possible that Asian countries like Japan with a good list of firms can be the next target of scammers. [more]

James' books included the well received[3] The Wonders of the Colorado Desert (1906), Through Ramona's Country (1909), In and Out of the Old Missions of California (1905), and The Lake of the Sky (1915). Characteristics of his writing included romanticism, an enthusiasm for natural environments, idealization of aboriginal lifeways, and health faddism. He was associate editor of The Craftsman 1904-05, editor of Out West[4] 1912-14, and lectured at the Panama-Pacific and Panama-California expositions 1915-16.[5]
The California State Library and the University of California, Berkeley have collections of James' books and pamphlets. A collection of his photographs is on file at the University of New Mexico. The Southwest Museum in Los Angeles also has some of his papers and photographs. [more]
