This is not so much a volume upon the Evidences of Christianity, as an examination of the Evidences of Infidelity. When the Infidel tells us that Christianity is false, and asks us to reject it, he is bound of course to provide us with something better and truer instead; under penalty of being considered a knave trying to swindle us out of our birthright, and laughed at as a fool, for imagining that he could persuade mankind to live and die without religion. Suppose he had proved to the world's satisfaction that all religion is a hoax, and all men professing it are liars, how does that comfort me in my hour of sorrow? Scoffing will not sustain a man in his solitude, when he has nobody to scoff at; and disbelief is only a bottomless tub, which will not float me across the dark river. If Infidels intend to convert the world, they must give us some positive system of truth which we can believe, and venerate, and trust. [more]

Henry Richard Vizetelly (30 July 1820 – 1 January 1894) was an English publisher and writer. He started the publications Pictorial Times and Illustrated Times, wrote several books while working in Paris and Betlin as correspondent for the Illustrated London News, and in 1887 founded a publishing house in London, Vizetelly and Company.[1] Vizetelly was born in London, the son of a printer. Robert Patterson (January 20, 1792 – August 7, 1881)[1] was a United States major general during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. During the onset of the latter, he commanded a brief engagement with Colonel Thomas J. Jackson on July 2, 1861, at the Battle of Hoke's Run and produced an early Union victory. His inability to contain a smaller Confederate army under General Joseph E. Johnston within the Shenandoah Valley was a proximate cause for the Union Army's defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run, but among Johnston's stated reasons for avoiding pursuit of the shattered Union Army as it fled in retreat to Washington, the size, integrity and mobility of Patterson's Army is prominent.[2] Shortly after First Bull Run, the three-month term of the volunteers who comprised a majority of his army expired, Patterson was honorably discharged with them, and his active military career ended.
