Western civilization has entered an epic phase of profound crisis. The crisis is not of external enemies, though their role is a factor. Nor is the crisis economic, political, cultural, ecological, demographic, or a product of warfare, though these features of a civilization’s existence also have a bearing. Largely unconsciously, we of this age are living through what are likely the final paroxysms of a dying civilization. Western civilization, like others before it, is experiencing the entropy of the everlasting – the final running down of that which most of its members assumed would last forever.

Into the Night - The Crisis of Western Civilization
The book is in three parts. The first will gather facts, insights, and perspectives from among the greatest global thinkers on civilizational decline and decay of the last century. The gravity of their observations is admittedly daunting, as is their breadth and complexity. But the synthesis of their ideas with the major themes of this book will lead us to an understanding not only of our time, but also what is likely to follow just over the horizon of history. We must persist in trudging up the steep heights and be neither discouraged by the effort nor deterred by the desolation which comes into view from these lofty vantage points.
All of our observers are Europeans or Americans who have studied and written within the last one hundred years. In all other respects they represent different backgrounds, disciplines and beliefs. They are historians, sociologists and anthropologists. They are Catholics, Protestants and agnostics. But they stand out, not in their differences, but in their similarities, especially – and this is very important to our purposes – the common denominators in their views about the condition and destiny of Western civilization.
In writing this book I remain conscious of many of the same hazards of being viewed as “alarmist” as when warning of the threat of radical Islamic terrorism – but now on a grander scale. However, I was right in 1996 in predicting in a newspaper commentary a catastrophic attack by Islamic radicals with the words: “the 1993 World Trade Center bombing will be a pinprick rehearsal for what will follow”. Some will insist that the views expressed herein of Western civilization, and the predictions for its future – not simply mine but also those of our scholarly observers – are alarmist. But I have only grown in a supreme confidence that history supports these conclusions. They will be affirmed if we view modern Western civilization with a rigorous insistence on looking reality in the face.
This is a collection of facts, interpretations, and observations, not a debate. Years of experience have proven to me that debate in any form is one of the most overrated methods for getting at the truth. Debate is more often an exercise in vanity and egotism focused on that most Western of goals: winning. My objective is not simply to be right. I was right in 1996 in predicting a catastrophic attack by Islamic radicals. But my greater purpose was to add to the scant few voices daring to give the same warning in the hope of being heeded. I hereby add my voice to a very small coterie of those who, on the grand scale of a civilization, are proclaiming dire warnings. Opinions are like flare, which can turn either way: they can spread like wild fire or encapsulate themselves within the bounds of personal integrity, and thus illuminate. I started writing opinions in the year 2008 through my blogs. I admit at times I did go wild with unsubstantiated accusations and surmises, leading to risky speculations and irresponsible opinions. Recently, I published a comprehensive book of my writings entitled "Writings @ Ankur Mutreja", and the present book is a short selection of my opinions presented therein with emphasis on responsible writing. I am an advocate by profession; therefore, most of my opinions have a tint of law; in the first part, the expression is simple; so, it is for lay persons who won’t mind a little exercise of mind in the legal arena; whereas, in the second part, I have gone whole hog with law, and I admit those without formal legal training may find it convenient to ignore. My style of writing is terse and pointed, but at times I have gone overboard like in one particular opinion on Aarushi murder, where emotions and logic intermingled in an expanded narrative. Rights, especially privacy and equality, are my area of focus; therefore most of my opinions herein; i.e., the ones discussing Brain Research, NCTC, Sting Operations, LGBTs, Prostitution, SC/ST quotas, and AADHAR/NPR; are focused on these two areas. In my selection, I have tried steering clear of politics, but politics is nevertheless all encompassing; however, one opinion on tussle between Delhi Police and AAP is majorily political; another political opinion, but with a strong emphasis on law, is the discussion of Zakia Jaffrey case. There were few very big events in the recent past; one amongst them is the Nirbhaya murder, and I have also discussed it, though my take is slightly different: I think the murder has been manipulated by the vested interests. I am a resident of an unauthorized colony; therefore, my opinion on Unauthorized Colonies has found place in the present selection; though I admit had the case been different, I wouldn’t have included it; so please bear with my little bias. Though I have no expertise in international affairs, I have taken a plunge into it albeit within the ambit of my legal training; the topics discussed are Indo-Pak relationship and Julian Assange.Finally, in the second part, I have discussed various judgments and laws. I would recommend anybody to read at least my critique of Aarushi Judgement. Other than that I have critiqued Binayak Sen Judgement and Aruna Shaunbaug Judgement. “Why is Switzerland in my kitchen?”
A tabletop, role-playing game called MystikQuest is a fun diversion from the disappointing lives of Wes Walker and his socially awkward, junior high friends, Marc and AJ. It doesn’t matter to Wes that his friends think his game is a lame rip-off of “Lord of the Rings.” Playing fantasy fiction is harmless fun until one fateful day when Wes discovers a dying creature in his treehouse, clutching an old arrowhead relic Wes dug up from his back yard. The creature looks remarkably like a goblin. Fiction soon becomes reality.
What Wes thought was an old arrowhead turns out to be an ancient magic artifact that defends itself by spinning elaborate, seemingly realistic illusions. One moment, they’re all in AJ’s basement, entertaining other reluctant teens banished from the adult party upstairs, the next moment, a sunny, Swiss mountainscape appears where AJ’s kitchen should be. It’s only an illusion, but it looks, sounds, smells, and feels real.
The level of inexplicability rises when Wes’s mysterious, long-lost Uncle Dru suddenly shows up claiming to be a real-life wizard assigned to protect the stone from a rogue member of his order. On cue, a black-clad wizard with red eyes bursts in, initiating a wand duel that trap the six bewildered teens in the crossfire. Stray wand blasts trigger the stone’s defense mechanism and the kids are magically transported into the fictional world of Wes’s MystikQuest game.
Chosen for them by the stone, the kids are thrust into ironic game avatars: Meek and scrawny Marc is a charismatic, muscular warrior; quiet, autistic Schroeder is a transcendent druid; brainy, logical Wes is a mystical wizard; tall, stylish high-schooler Tyler is a diminutive hobbit; introverted emo Katie is a scantily-clad, voluptuous elf warrioress; and foul-mouthed, obnoxious AJ is the equally foul-mouthed and obnoxious half-ogre. Adjusting to their new superhuman bodies and abilities, they must navigate the game to somehow conclude its story for the stone to release them. But how can a bunch of nerdy, awkward teens who rarely exercise or go outside, much less know how to fight maniacal orcs and fire-spewing dragons, be expected to defeat an entire evil kingdom as daunting as (and ripped off from) Tolkein’s Mordor? And how can they stop the red-eyed wizard from sabotaging the game and hunting them like prey?
With help from two of the game characters, a kindly, garrulous old wizard and an Aragorn-like heir in exile, the kids will battle giant spiders, drunken brutes, moronic orcs, plagiarized plots, and their own insecurities to somehow beat the game before they’re stuck in the stone’s illusion forever.

Triathlon is an addictive sport that is growing in popularity all over the world. Along with this, new books are published about triathlon every year. What’s special about this one? This book is written for a specific type of person. This book won’t serve you unless you:
1) Are wanting to get started in triathlon. In other words, you're a beginner rather than an expert.
2) You're busy. In other words, you don't have a lot of free time to do extensive amounts of training.
This book is written for people who are feeling a bit stuck for how to get started when they don't have the time to follow a demanding training schedule. You might be a parent with young children. You might be a mum or a dad and all your free time is taken up with cooking, cleaning, and looking after your children. You'd love to get fit, get healthy, get outdoors, go swimming, and so on, but you just can't see how.
You might be a professional of some kind. You have a demanding job. You need to travel. Work requires that you work late into the evening and have to get up early. Client deadlines make managing your own personal exercise schedule hard. Whatever your situation, this book is written for you if you want to get into triathlon, but you just can't see how you can manage it.
Here’s my story in brief: two years ago my wife and I went on holiday with our young (pre-school) kids. I was exhausted and worn down by work, and spent the whole week wanting to doze, crash, eat carbohydrates, eat chocolate, drink coffee, or drink alcohol. I felt unbearably lethargic. I resented myself for being such an unfit dad; but I just felt like I was in some kind of weary stupor that I couldn’t break out of. And I was only 35! My joints felt stiff and slow, and I felt exhausted every morning I woke up. Sometime during that holiday I decided, I’m going to get healthy; not just fit, but healthy and fit. I’m going to enter a triathlon. I can’t not try to do something about this lack of energy and vibrancy.
At the same time, an internal voice was saying, ‘How?! Your job is too busy, and family life is so demanding. When are you going to get the time to train for a triathlon? And you can hardly swim!’ But I continued to say to myself – I’ll have to learn and find a way. I can’t not try.
6 months later I completed my first triathlon (a sprint distance). A year after that I completed my first half-ironman (1.9k swim, 90k bike, 21k run). And I tell you honestly – I never trained more than 3 hours a week. Most weeks, less than 2. My work and family commitments forced me to read and learn widely about how to train smart to overhaul my health and fitness. This little book gives you the key principles I learnt along the way.
I’m not writing this for elite athletes – I’m not an elite athlete myself; please don’t buy this if you want to hear from a veteran or an elite athlete. But if you’re someone wanting to get started and who feels stuck and constrained at the same time, then I really believe I can help – I’ve been there, and walked the journey, and kept records of what has really worked.

Friedrich Heinrich Karl "Fritz" Haarmann was born in Hanover on 25 October 1879, the sixth and youngest child born to Johanna (née Claudius) and Ollie Haarmann. Fritz was a quiet child, with few friends his own age or sex and who seldom socialized with any children other than his siblings outside of school. From an early age, Haarmann's behavior was noticeably effeminate. He was known to shun boys' activities and instead play with his sisters' dolls and dress in their clothes. He also developed a passion for both needlework and cookery,and would develop a close relationship with his mother who spoiled her youngest child. Reportedly, Haarmann's father married his mother, when she was 41 years old, and seven years his senior, on account of her wealth and the substantial dowry their marriage would eventually bring him. Haarmann Sr. was known to be argumentative and short-tempered who, through several affairs he conducted throughout his marriage, would contract syphilis in his later years.Despite his being an authoritarian who had little time for his children and a notorious womaniser, Haarmann's parents remained together until his mother's death in April 1901. In 1886, Haarmann began his schooling, where he was noted by teachers to be a spoiled and mollycoddled child who was prone to daydreaming. Although his behavior at school was noted to be exemplary, his academic performance was below average and Haarmann had to repeat a school year twice. On one occasion, when he was about eight years old,Haarmann was molested by one of his teachers, although he never discussed this incident in detail.This was a major point on his life,that forever changed him. Haarmann grew into a trim, physically strong youth. With his parents' consent, he finished his schooling in 1894. Upon leaving school, he briefly obtained employment as an apprentice locksmith in Neuf-Brisach before opting, at age 15, to enroll in a military academy in the town of Breisach.His military training began on 4 April 1895. Haarmann initially adapted to military life, and performed well as a trainee soldier. However, after five months of military service, he began to suffer periodic lapses of consciousness which, although initially described by a medical professional as being sudden signs of anxiety neurosis, would subsequently be diagnosed as being "equivalent to epilepsy" in October 1895. The following month, Haarmann discharged himself from the military and returned to Hanover, where he briefly worked in a cigar factory his father had established in 1888. At the age of 16, Haarmann committed his first known sexual offenses, all of which involved young boys whom he would lure to secluded areas—typically cellars—before proceeding to sexually abuse them. He was first arrested for committing offenses of this nature in July 1896. Following further offenses of this nature, the Division for Criminal Matters opted to place Haarmann in a mental institution in the city of Hildesheim in February 1897. Although briefly transferred to a Hanover hospital for psychiatric evaluation, he would be certified as being "incurably deranged, and unfit to stand trial by a psychologist named Gurt Schmalfuß. Schmalfuß ordered Haarmann to be confined at the mental institution indefinitely. Haarmann was returned to the mental institution on 28 May 1897. Seven months later, Haarmann escaped the mental institution. With apparent assistance from his mother, Haarmann fled to Zürich, Switzerland. Here, he lived with a relative of his mother, and obtained employment as a handyman in a shipyard. Haarmann remained in Zürich for 16 months before he returned to Hanover in April 1899. Early the following year, he became engaged to a woman named Erna Loewert,who soon became pregnant with his child.[n 2] In October 1900, Haarmann received notification to perform his compulsory military service. On 12 October 1900, Haarmann was deployed to the Alsatian city of Colmar to serve in the Number 10 Rifle Battalion. Throughout his service, Haarmann earned a reputation among his superiors as an exemplary soldier and excellent marksman, and he would later describe his period of service with this battalion as being the happiest of his entire life. After collapsing while on exercise with his battalion in October 1901, Haarmann began to suffer dizzy spells, and was subsequently hospitalized for over four months. He was later deemed "unsuitable for military service and work" and was dismissed from military service on 28 July 1902. Discharged from the military under medical terms described as being "probable" dementia praeox, Haarmann was awarded a monthly military pension of 21 gold marks.
