Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 – 5 February 1881) was a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher.[1]Considered one of the most important social commentators of his time, he presented many lectures during his lifetime with certain acclaim in the Victorian era. One of those conferences resulted in his famous work On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History where he explains that the key role in history lies in the actions of the "Great Man", claiming that "History is nothing but the biography of the Great Man".
He was a very respected historian and his book The French Revolution: A History remains popular nowadays and it was the inspiration for Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities. Carlyle's Sartor Resartus is considered one of the finest works of the 19th century.
A great polemicist, he called economics "the dismal science",[2] wrote articles for the Edinburgh Encyclopedia[3] and his Occasional Discourse on the Negro Question remains controversial.[4] Once a Christian, he lost his faith while attending the University of Edinburgh, embracing later a form of Deism.[5] His philosophy, combined with his appreciation of the German culture, the Norse mythology and his anti-democratic views, is considered by some a prelude for fascism.
In mathematics, he is known for the Carlyle circle,[6] a method used in quadratic equations and for developing ruler-and-compass constructions of regular polygons. [more]

Maria Edgeworth (1 January 1768 – 22 May 1849) was a prolific Anglo-Irish writer of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe.[1] She held advanced views, for a woman of her time, on estate management, politics and education, and corresponded with some of the leading literary and economic writers, including Sir Walter Scott and David Ricardo.
Maria Edgeworth was born at Black Bourton, Oxfordshire. She was the second child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth (who eventually fathered 22 children by four wives) and Anna Maria Edgeworth (née Elers); Maria was thus an aunt of Francis Ysidro Edgeworth. She spent her early years with her mother's family in England, until her mother's death when Maria was five. When her father married his second wife Honora Sneyd in 1773, she went with him to his estate, Edgeworthstown, in County Longford, Ireland.
Maria was sent to Mrs. Lattafière's school in Derby after Honora fell ill in 1775. When Honora died in 1780 and Maria's father married Honora's sister Elizabeth (considered somewhat shocking in that time's moral climate), Maria transferred to Mrs. Devis's school in London. Her father's attention became fully focused on her in 1781 when she nearly lost her sight to an eye infection.[2] Returning home at the age of 14, she took charge of her many younger siblings[3] and was home-tutored in law, Irish economics and politics, science, and literature by her father. She also started her lifelong correspondences with learned men, mainly members of the Lunar Society.
She became her father's assistant in managing the Edgeworthtown estate, which had become run-down during the family's 1777–1782 absence; she would live and write there for the rest of her life. With their bond strengthened, Maria and her father began a lifelong academic collaboration "of which she was the more able and nimble mind."[2] Present at Edgeworthstown was an extended family, servants and tenants. She observed and recorded the details of daily Irish life, later drawing on this experience for her novels about the Irish. She also mixed with the Anglo-Irish gentry, particularly Kitty Pakenham (later the wife of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington), Lady Moira, and her aunt Margaret Ruxton of Black Castle. Margaret supplied her with the novels of Anne Radcliffe and William Godwin and encouraged her in her writing.[4] [more]

The lecture
Kameela, the Superpictus female mosquito, stood on an oak coffee table where most of the light coming from the neon side lamp was focused, the light was strong and sharp, it was a kind of light Kameela fancied. Mumbo, a Bifurcatus Male Mosquito, stood beside her looking at the black and white spots on the front edge of her wings, then back at her eyes which were open wide. Kameela then looked up at Mumbo who was more than five times her size. "You know, I really don't understand why most humans consider us to be evil" Said Kameela.
-"If only they knew how sophisticated we are, they would probably change their minds" Answered Mumbo.
The electro-magnetic waves coming from Flinty, a Sergenti female mosquitoe who's about the size of Kameela, reached the antennas of Kameela and Mumbo, "Look at me guys, look over here" She shouted. Kameela and Mumbo looked at her from a distance to see her standing on the shoulder of a man, sucking out his blood, and by the look on her face that was gradually turning red, one could tell that she was enjoying every millisecond of it, and that she saw no aggression in the act she was engaged in. The man was lying on his single bed, reading a romance novel, totally unaware of Flinty’s presence. He had no shirt on for it was one of the hottest days of October 1996. Kameela and Mumbo signaled to Flinty to come and join them. Flinty took her time for she knew that the man was totally engaged in reading, and had no idea what was going on, and besides, Flinty perfected the act of sucking blood to a point where she did it with full confidence, and she was skilled to a degree that she could sense if a man noticed her or not by his perspiration rhythm, which she could feel by her antennas. When she finished her act, she flew proudly and joined the couple who were standing there in the light. Kameela shook Flinty’s hand and said “I’d like you to meet Mumbo, my friend.”
-“Nice to meet you Mumbo” Said Flinty, and shook his hand in caution, for he was a huge mosquito. “Where are you from?” continued Flinty.
-“I’m from down town Haifa, the slums of down town” replied Mumbo.
-“You’re a local too, like Kameela, how nice”.
-“I’m a Bifurcatus, so watch out” He said.
-“Oh, I had a very close Bifurcatus friend back in Jerusalem when I was younger” Said Flinty, and because most mosquitoes were racist against Bifurcatus mosquitoes, mostly because they are extremely clumsy, Mumbo figured that by mentioning that she had a close Bifurcatus friend, in a way, she was hinting that she’s not a racist character. Mumbo was very sensitive to that issue.
Mumbo smiling “So what do you do?”
-“I am a student of economics”
Mumbo stepped away and said “Oh, you’re into business”
-“What do you do then big guy” said Flinty.
-“I stand and talk” said Mumbo.
-“He’s a stand up comedian” followed Kameela.

We look where the crowd is not looking for an underlying rationale for the direction of the main trend. Because the systems constituent parts are mostly based on human behaviour which doesn’t change, not on fashion, we can be confident it will continue to work.
The financial markets, as anyone familiar with them knows, are deeply paradoxical. They have a logic of their own which is why in a way the opposite of normal logic. Hence the market adage “sell on the news” applies to good news not bad news. Hence other bits of market lore like “a bull market climbs a wall of worry: a bear market flows down a river of hope.” Markets do whatever they need to do to confound the greatest number of people.
This happens because prices reflect expectations. If everyone expects unemployment to rise, or a trade balance to fall, or inflation to remain steady, there is no intrinsic reason why they should be wrong: the expectation doesn’t affect the outcome. But if everyone expects shares to fall, or the dollar to rise, there is every reason why they should be wrong: because current share price levels already reflect the expectations of lower prices, and the current level of the dollar already discounts a rise. In other words, the expectation vitiates the outcome.
