Leonard Merrick (21 February 1864[1] – 7 August 1939) was an English novelist.[2] Although largely forgotten today, he was widely admired by his peers, J. M. Barrie called Merrick the "novelist's novelist."

He was born as Leonard Miller in Belsize Park, London of Jewish parentage.[3] After schooling at Brighton College, he studied to be a solicitor in Brighton and studied law at Heidelberg, but he was forced to travel to South Africa at the age of eighteen after his father suffered a serious financial loss.[3] There he worked as an overseer in the Kimberley diamond mine[3] and in a solicitors office.[4] After surviving a near-fatal case of "camp fever,"[5][6] he returned to London in the late 1880s and worked as an actor and actor-manager[4] under the stage name of Leonard Merrick.[5] He legally changed his name to Leonard Merrick in 1892.[3] He later worked his experiences in South Africa and in the theatre into numerous works of fiction.[7][8] Merrick's novels include Mr Bazalgette's Agent (1888), a detective story; Violet Moses (1891), about a Jewish financier and his troubled wife; The Worldlings (1900), a psychological investigation of a crime; Conrad in Quest of His Youth (1903), the tale of a disillusioned man who, at thirty- seven, sets out to pick up the romantic threads of his younger life, it is "judged his most successful work"[3] according to John Sutherland. Edgar Allan Poe (born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American author, poet, editor, and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story, and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.
Born in Boston, he was the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia. Although they never formally adopted him, Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for the young man. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. Later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point and declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, Poe parted ways with John Allan. [more]

The Definite Object is the second Jeffery Farnol book I’ve read. It’s also the second Jeffery Farnol book I’ve picked hoping to find out that it was an early regency romance in the vein of Georgette Heyer, as I’ve read that they co-created the genre. I guess I missed the subtitle. But I find myself wondering whether the regencies are any different. Do they also all feature disaffected millionaires going incognito in order to hang out with poor people? Perhaps someday I will find out.
The disaffected millionaire in The Definite Object is Geoffrey Ravenslee, who likes to race cars and box with his chauffeur and (apparently) be cheated by his servants. He realizes that he’s not doing anything with his life, so when he finds young Spike Chesterton attempting to burgle his home, he follows Spike home to Hell’s Kitchen, hoping to find someone to fall in love with. He finds Hermione Chesterton, Spike’s sister, who is of course exceptionally beautiful, as well as virtuous and hardworking.
Spike is mixed up with a bad crowd, the worst member of which, Bud McGinnis, wants to marry Hermione. Bud has already driven one girl to suicide, and spends a lot of time trying to get Spike drunk. Geoffrey beats him up. It all feels like Farnol has raised the level of melodrama much higher than the story requires. There was one thread of the plot that I really liked, though: Soapy, one of Bud’s henchmen, is actively trying to bring about Bud’s downfall (he was in love with Maggie Finlay, the aforementioned suicide), and he’s the only character who seems to be aware of how events are playing out — everyone else is pretty self-involved. He’s not quite a bad guy, since he’s working against Bud, but he’s definitely not a good guy, either, and while I don’t know if I want to call Soapy himself sinister, the scenes in which he plots his revenge definitely are. It’s like the whole storyline was borrowed from a different book– a detective novel from the 1880s, probably — it wouldn’t be out of place in something like The Diamond Coterie. [more]

From 1876 to 1881 he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, including a period working in Aston (now a district of Birmingham) and Sheffield, as well as Ruyton XI Towns, Shropshire.[8] While studying, Doyle began writing short stories. Doyle was employed as a doctor on the Greenland whaler Hope of Peterhead in 1880[12] and, after his graduation from university in 1881 as MB/CM, as a ship's surgeon on the SS Mayumba during a voyage to the West African coast.[5] He completed his M.D. degree (an advanced degree in England beyond the usual medical degrees) on the subject of tabes dorsalis in 1885.[13] [more]

Arthur Cecil Gask (10 July 1869—25 June 1951), dentist and novelist, was born on 10 July 1869 at St Marylebone, London, fourth of five children of Charles Gask, merchant, and his wife Fanny, née Edis.[1]
Gask, accompanied by his second wife, their two sons, and by a daughter of his first marriage, emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia in 1920, where he set up practice as a dentist. He was among the first in the city to carry out extractions with gas.[1]
He began writing crime fiction while waiting for his patients and in 1921 paid for the publication of his first novel, The Secret of the Sandhills, which was an immediate success.[1]
Over a period of thirty years Gask wrote over thirty books as well as contributing short stories to The Mail in Adelaide. Most of his novels described the activities of a detective, Gilbert Larose, in solving crimes. Gask's work was translated into several European languages, serialised in newspapers and broadcast on radio. He also wrote short stories.
H. G. Wells, an admirer of Gask's work, corresponded with Gask. Wells regarded The Vengeance of Larose (1939) as Gask's "best piece of story-telling...It kept me up till half-past one."[2]
Bertrand Russell, also an admiring reader, called to see Gask at Gask's home in Walkerville, an Adelaide suburb, when he was in Adelaide in August 1950.[2] Gask was reported to have been delighted when, within a few hours after his arrival in Adelaide, Lord Russell called in and spent about an hour and a half with him. Russell confided that he was a reader of Mr. Gask's books in England, and said that now they were so near to each other he felt he really must make his acquaintance. Lord Russell was 78 at the time and Arthur Gask was 81.[3]
Gask's sister, Lilian Gask, was also a writer.
When nearly 80, Gask was still turning out two 80,000-words novels a year,[4] and was reported to have got out of bed to write 23 pages and complete his final novel, Crime After Crime.[2]
Arthur Gask died on 25 June 1951, in an Adelaide private hospital.[2] [more]

A carefully crafted illusion? Or perhaps there was a sinister force at work, hiding behind the veil of mystery. Holmes stood up, a determined glint in his eyes. A 40 Chapter, fast-moving drama centered within Toronto’s Downtown Core in the mid 1980’s; several years after the 1970’s Massage Parlor Era is phased out! As a consequence of mysterious deaths related to the Yonge Street Strip; its initial cause is mysterious! Initially defined as somewhat related to recent epidemics - but far more worrisome inasmuch as it evolves into a ‘Sudden-Death Syndrome’. Whatever it be its source; such symptoms appear to affect the more ‘street-wise’ generally-engaged in characteristic sub-cultural activities; perhaps even a release of ‘bad home-made drugs’?
The City Morgue soon contains several victims - many of whom are therein stored awaiting identification! Also rapidly rising so-close upon an “Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome” the medical profession - fearing another potential epidemic - so as to avoid any potential public-oriented-panic - has a need for ‘secrecy’. During an all-out Nation-wide effort to identify the source, its potential dangers are ‘prematurely-released’. Authorities concerned over the consequence of there yet being another epidemic so close upon the heels of both the Hepatitis, Herpes and Aids scares, intending only to withhold incidents until some “Cause” can be discerned - an undesired effect sets in - the Media is alerted thereby inciting a series of clandestine activities.
Within these chapters there are several dramatic sub-plots featuring acts of ‘pure vengeance’ that escalate into a sequence of murders; in which violent confrontation among various ‘Constabulary’ levels also erupts.
Weaved into this intrigue is a major RCMP Drug Enforcement ‘under-cover investigation’ entirely-independent of Metro cops and which also becomes both hindrance and help.
Several colorful characters are built into this drama involving the Metro Police; featuring Arnie Fuller - a Uniformed Officer who develops a close association with Dr. Carl Sylinski - Medical Research Specialist; both share center stage as the book’s main characters. As the plot thickens, Fuller is mostly pitted up against his arch-foes - Homicide Detectives Joseph Mancuso and Detective Bruno Ferrani; in this exchange of both personal and professional personalities, Fuller often fares 2nd best.
Long before Epidemiologist, Carl Sylinski, can arrive at a solution to the mysterious deaths - the “Yonge Street Strip” gradually-becomes “Stripped” of patrons. The disease - one that will be given a title, cause and cure before the story ends - is defined as ‘an elusive microorganism continuously present within the human population’; and which can become ‘viral’ under certain conditions; it drawing its menace to humankind from a non-human reservoir becoming a ‘microbe’ able to ‘transmigrate’ to humans”! Sylinski, assisted by dedicated researchers across the U.S. and Canada eventually discovers the source; he then defines as a “chameleon virus”! Adding a touch of substance is a taste of ‘romance and tragedy’ - mixed within a wisp of philosophy. [more]

Readers will be presented with a novel that has drama ,mystery and Crime in its content.They notice a switch between narrative point of view and characters.The time when the events occur its not static.Although it begins in the present with the events occurring it skips on the past in things that are related to Bruce live. There are ten chapters and they need to be read in that order to understand the whole book.
The plots opens by introducing Bruce Loan and giving a short introduction of his life, mind and beliefs.Bruce in the moment the story is presenting is 42 years old.He has lost everything on his life and need to find meaning or he is going to get crazy.
Readers then learn more about how he lost his father in his early age.The story explores how he feels about that and how the event happened by returning back on time.The story of the book develops by narrating a crime case(which is not the main one happening in the book) of a mother and son killed in their home and how that is affecting on his world perception.
The focus then returns on his present (2013) when the main crime case of the book starts to get shape.He is on charge of investigation for a murder of a female under Telma River bridge.The case is so difficult for his mind because the victim was tortured and finally left with an angel mark on her chest.
The story develops more on investigating the crime but it turns back in times through his memory telling how he lost his wife Joan and his son Nick and how that affected him.
Those skips on time will become very usual in book in order to explain more of the story, with the killer getting more attention and killing more victims but in the same time more of the Bruce life getting reviled.
In the last chapters book take another shape because Bruce starts to go in group therapy and feels that he is being understood there, but this is not the most important thing there because he meets Gloria a woman that gets on his heart so fast.
The investigation leads on exiting events as far as Angel killer case while he gets new faces on his life and takes a journey in a village of an African tribe when he gets a whole new perspective of live.
The last chapter (10) is the final part of book which gives final touch in three dimensions of book: His emotions and adaption from losing his wife and son, story with Gloria and finally fighting with the demons outside.Readers will also notice a small detail in the end which gives indications what will happen in the second part of this series having in mind that this book is only the first one.
