She was born as Catherine Mumford in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England, in 1829 to Methodist parents, John Mumford and Sarah Milward. Her father was an occasional lay preacher and carriage maker;coach builder. Her family later moved to Boston, Lincolnshire, and later lived in Brixton, London. From an early age, Catherine was a serious and sensitive girl. She had a strong Christian upbringing and was said to have read the Bible through eight times before the age of 12.[1] During Catherine’s adolescence a spinal curvature led to years of enforced idleness.[2] She kept herself busy, however, and was especially concerned about the problems of alcoholism. Even as a young girl she had served as secretary of a Juvenile Temperance Society writing articles for a temperance magazine. Catherine was a member of the local Band of Hope and a supporter of the national Temperance Society. When Catherine refused to condemn Methodist Reformers in 1850, the Wesleyans expelled her. For the Reformers she led a girls’ Sunday school class in Clapham. At the home of Edward Rabbits, in 1851, she met William Booth, who also had been expelled by the Wesleyans for reform sympathies. William was reciting a temperance poem, “The Grog-seller’s Dream,” which appealed to Catherine, who had embraced the new Methodist passion for abstinence.[3] [more]

Ellen (Mrs. Henry) Wood (b. 1814–d. 1887) was one of the best-selling British novelists of the 19th century. Best known for her sensational potboiler East Lynne (1861), she published over forty books in addition to reams of essays, reviews, and short stories. She was born in 1814 into the family of a successful glove manufacturer, Thomas Price, and, despite a spinal curvature that developed in adolescence and plagued her for the rest of her life, she excelled at her studies. In 1836 she married Henry Wood, and spent the next twenty years living in France. When her husband left his employment in the 1850s, for reasons that are still unclear, Mrs. Wood became her family’s main breadwinner by writing short stories for a range of family periodicals. Her first full-length novel, Danesbury House (1860), was soon followed by the vastly popular East Lynne. In 1867 Wood bought the until-then risqué periodical the Argosy and edited it until her death in 1887. [more]

Moll Flanders is a novel by Daniel Defoe. It purports to be the true account of the life of the eponymous Moll, detailing her exploits from birth until old age. Moll's mother is a convict in Newgate Prison in London who is given a reprieve by "pleading her belly," a reference to the custom of staying the executions of pregnant criminals. Her mother is eventually transported to America, and Moll Flanders (not her birth name, she emphasizes, taking care not to reveal it) is raised until adolescence by a goodly foster mother. Thereafter she gets attached to a household as a servant where she is loved by both sons, the elder of whom convinces her to "act like they were married" in bed. Unwilling to marry her, he persuades her to marry his younger brother. After five years of marriage, she then is widowed, leaves her children in the care of in-laws, and begins honing the skill of passing herself off as a fortuned widow to attract a man who will marry her and provide her with security. I Suspect That His Emotional Involvement Took Root When He Read Shakespeare As A Boy--One Remembers The Terror He Experienced In Reading Of The Ghost In _Hamlet_, And It Was Probably Also As A Boy That He Suffered That Shock Of Horrified Outrage And Grief At The Death Of Cordelia That Prevented Him From Rereading The Scene Until Be Came To Edit The Play. Johnson'S Deepest Feelings And Convictions, Professor Clifford Has Recently Reminded Us, Can Be Traced Back To His Childhood And Adolescence. But It Is Surprising To Learn, As One Does From His Commentary, That Other Scenes In These Very Plays (_Hamlet_ And _King Lear_, And In _Macbeth_, Too) Leave Him Unmoved, If One Can So Interpret The Absence Of Any But An Explanatory Note On, Say, Lear'S Speech Beginning "Pray, Do Not Mock Me;/I Am A Very Foolish Fond Old Man." Besides This Negative Evidence There Is Also The Positive Evidence Of Many Notes Which Display The Dispassionate Editorial Mind At Work Where One Might Expect From Johnson An Outburst Of Personal Feeling. There Are Enough Of These Outbursts To Warrant Our Expecting Others, But We Are Too Frequently Disappointed. Perhaps Johnson Thought Of Most Of Shakespeare'S Tragedies As "Imperial Tragedies" And That Is Why He Could Maintain A Stance Of Aloofness; Conversely, "The Play Of _Timon_ Is A Domestick Tragedy, And Therefore Strongly Fastens On The Attention Of The Reader." But The "Tragedy" Of Timon Does Not Capture The Attention Of The Modern Reader, And Perhaps All Attempts To Fix Johnson'S Likes And Dislikes, And The Reasons For Them, In The Canon Of Shakespeare'S Plays Must Circle Endlessly Without Ever Getting To Their Destination.
