Community Development (CD) is a broad term applied to the practices and academic disciplines of civic leaders, activists, involved citizens and professionals to improve various aspects of local communities.
Community development seeks to empower individuals and groups of people by providing them with the skills they need to effect change in their own communities. These skills are often created through the formation of large social groups working for a common agenda. Community developers must understand both how to work with individuals and how to affect communities' positions within the context of larger social institutions.
There are a myriad of job titles for CD workers and their employers include public authorities and voluntary or non-governmental organisations, funded by the state and by independent grant making bodies. Since the nineteen seventies the prefix word ‘community’ has also been adopted by several other occupations from the police and health workers to planners and architects, who work with more disadvantaged groups and communities and have been influenced by CD approaches.
CD practitioners have over many years developed a range of skills and approaches for working within local communities and in particular with disadvantaged people. These include less formal educational methods, community organising and group work skills. Since the nineteen sixties and seventies through the various anti poverty programmes in both developed and developing countries, CD practitioners have been influenced by structural analyses as to the causes of disadvantage and poverty i.e. inequalities in the distribution of wealth, income, land etc and especially political power and the need to mobilise people power to affect social change. Thus the influence of such educators as Paulo Friere and his focus upon this work also being about politicising the poor. Other key people who have influenced this field are Saul Alinsky (Rules for Radicals) and EF Schumacher (Small is Beautiful).
The UK currently hosts the main international body representing community development, the International Association for Community Development. IACD was started in the USA in 1953, moved to Belgium in the seventies and to the UK (Scotland) in 1998. Community development as a term has taken off widely in anglophone countries i.e. the USA, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand and other countries in the Commonwealth. It is also used in some countries in eastern Europe with active CD associations in Hungary and Romania. The International Community Development Journal, published by Oxford University Press, and set up in 1967 has been the major forum for research and dissemination of international CD theory and practice. Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle KGStJ, DL (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was a British physician and writer who is most noted for his fictional stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered milestones in the field of crime fiction. He is also known for writing the fictional adventures of a second character he invented, Professor Challenger, and for popularising the mystery of the Mary Celeste.[1] He was a prolific writer whose other works include fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels.Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at 11 Picardy Place, Edinburgh, Scotland.[2][3] His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish Catholic descent, and his mother, Mary (née Foley), was Irish Catholic. From 1875 to 1876, he was educated at the Jesuit school Stella Matutina in Feldkirch, Austria.[5] By the time he left, he had rejected religion and become an agnostic,[6] though he would eventually become a spiritualist mystic.[7]
From 1876 to 1881 he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, including a period working in Aston (now a district of Birmingham) and Sheffield, as well as Ruyton XI Towns, Shropshire.[8] While studying, Doyle began writing short stories. His earliest extant fiction, "The Haunted Grange of Goresthorpe", was unsuccessfully submitted to Blackwood's Magazine.[5] His first published piece The Mystery of Sasassa Valley, a story set in South Africa, was printed in Chambers's Edinburgh Journal on 6 September 1879.[5][9] On 20 September 1879, he published his first academic article, "Gelsemium as a Poison" in the British Medical Journal.[5][10][11] [more]

Bertrand William Sinclair (1881–1972) was a Canadian novelist known for a series of westerns set in the United States, and also for a series of novels set in his home province of British Columbia.
Sinclair was born 9 Jan 1881 in Edinburgh, Scotland, U.K. He was the son of George Bertrand and Robina (Williamson) Sinclair. His name at birth was William Brown Sinclair, but he changed it, adopting his father's middle name as his first name. He emigrated to Canada with his mother in 1889.[1]
At age 14 Sinclair ran away to Montana and became a cowboy for the next seven years. In 1903 he left Montana for Seattle and San Francisco, but returned to Montana, living in Great Falls for the next three years. In 1905 he first published stories. Also in 1905, he married author Bertha M. Brown, better known under her pen name (using her first husband's last name): B. M. Bower. Bower, a very prolific novelist, taught him to write "productively" and to employ a formula.[1] Sinclair and B. M. Bower had one daughter.
By 1908 Sinclair and Bower had moved to Santa Cruz, California. They divorced in 1912. The same year, Sinclair married his first wife's cousin, Ruth Brown. They had a child in 1912, a daughter. The Sinclairs moved to Vancouver, B.C., ultimately settling in Pender Harbour. Sinclair lived in Pender Harbour until his death.[2]
Sinclair's first series of work took place in Montana. Sinclair had disapproved of previous westerns he had read because he felt the action portrayed was far different that the lives cowboys actually led. When he moved to Vancouver, the settings of his works changed (except for two very late westerns). He tended to write about social causes, and worked in the timber industry prior to writing Big Timber. Later, before writing about the fishing industry, he worked as a commercial fisherman and then wrote Poor Man's Rock. Later in life, from 1936–66, he worked full time as a licensed commercial fisherman.[1]
In writing about the outdoors, Sinclair was influenced in his portrayals by Jack London. In his works treating social causes, he was influenced by Upton Sinclair, who may have been a cousin.[1] [more]

Philip Edward Muskett (1857-1909), medical practitioner and health reformer, was born on 5 February 1857 at Collingwood, Melbourne, son of English-born, Particular Baptist parents Charles Muskett, bookseller, and his wife Phoebe, née Charlwood. Educated at Melbourne Model School and at Wesley College, where he won a Draper scholarship, in 1877 Philip enrolled in medicine at the University of Melbourne, passing several subjects, but not graduating. He undertook further medical studies at Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland, and became a licentiate of the Royal colleges of Physicians and of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in 1880. After spending some time in London, he returned to Australia and became a medical officer at (Royal) Melbourne Hospital.
In 1882 Muskett moved to Sydney, taking up a position at Sydney Hospital. Within a year he became surgeon superintendent of the steam immigration service, medical superintendent of the quarantine station and honorary surgeon at Sydney Hospital. He went into private practice in 1885 and, since about a third of his patients were children, focused on infant health and welfare, taking up contemporary concerns about infant mortality rates—in his Australian Appeal, (1892)—and the incidence of rickets. In 1888 he brought out the first of four editions of a small book on the feeding and management of Australian infants and also a more comprehensive guide to The Health and Diet of Children in Australia. In 1891 came his more scientific Prescribing and Treatment in the Diseases of Children. He served as secretary to the New South Wales section of four intercolonial medical congresses in the 1880s and 1890s. In addition, he was medical officer and honorary surgeon to the New South Wales League of Wheelmen, the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales and the Civil Ambulance and Transport Brigade. Remembered by the bookseller James Tyrrell as a keen bibliophile, he was president and chairman of the Sydney School of Arts debating society and a founder of the New South Wales Literary and Debating Society's Union. Muskett discussed the need for more technical education (including compulsory cookery lessons for girls) in his public lectures on health, published in 1899 as The Diet of Australian School Children and Technical Education. The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare is a novel by G. K. Chesterton. The book is sometimes referred to as a metaphysical thriller.
In Edwardian era London, Gabriel Syme is recruited at Scotland Yard to a secret anti-anarchist police corps. Lucian Gregory, an anarchistic poet, lives in the suburb of Saffron Park. Syme meets him at a party and they debate the meaning of poetry. Gregory argues revolt is the basis of poetry. Syme demurs, insisting the essence of poetry is not revolution, but rather law. He antagonizes Gregory by asserting the most poetical of human creations is the timetable for the London Underground. He suggests Gregory isn't really serious about his anarchism. This so irritates Gregory that he takes Syme to an underground anarchist meeting place, revealing his public endorsement of anarchy is a ruse to make him seem harmless, when in fact he is an influential member of the local chapter of the European anarchist council.
The central council consists of seven men, each using the name of a day of the week as a code name, and the position of Thursday is about to be elected by Gregory's local chapter. Gregory expects to win the election, but just before the election Syme reveals to Gregory after an oath of secrecy that he is a secret policeman. Fearful Syme may use his speech in evidence of a prosecution, Gregory's weakened words fail to convince the local chapter he is sufficiently dangerous for the job. Syme makes a rousing anarchist speech and wins the vote. He is sent immediately as the chapter's delegate to the central council.
In his efforts to thwart the council's intentions, however, Syme discovers five of the other six members are also undercover detectives; each was employed just as mysteriously and assigned to defeat the Council. They all soon find out they were fighting each other and not real anarchists; such was the mastermind plan of their president Sunday. In a surreal conclusion, Sunday himself is unmasked as only seeming to be terrible; in fact, he is a force of good like the detectives. However, he is unable to give an answer to the question of why he caused so much trouble and pain for the detectives. Gregory, the only real anarchist, seems to challenge the good council. His accusation is they, as rulers, have never suffered like Gregory and their other subjects, and so their power is illegitimate. However, Syme is able to refute this accusation immediately because of the terrors inflicted by Sunday on the rest of the council. [more]

I was just viewing some videos and one of the videos talked about women empowerment. Amen. I have been on the planet earth for almost 47 years now. Amen. And I have seen women raped beaten and this is including young female girls. Amen. I don't know of nothing else. Amen. If she goes to church the females are abused if they go to work or school they still get abused. Amen. I have seen this all my life. Amen. All I was told this much that God himself formed a male body because he is a male and he put himself inside that body through his own breath and man became a living soul. Amen. Robert Browning (7 May 1812 – 12 December 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, especially dramatic monologues, madRobert Browning was born in Camberwell (a district now forming part of the Borough of Southwark in south London), the only son of Sarah Anna (née Wiedemann) and Robert Browning.[1][2] His father was a well-paid clerk for the Bank of England, earning about £150 per year.[3] Browning's paternal grandfather was a wealthy slave owner in Saint Kitts, West Indies, but Browning's father was an abolitionist. Browning's father had been sent to the West Indies to work on a sugar plantation, but, revolted by the slavery there, he returned to England. Browning's mother was a daughter of a German shipowner who had settled in Dundee in Scotland, and his Scottish wife. Browning had one sister, Sarianna. Browning's paternal grandmother, Margaret Tittle, who had inherited a plantation in St Kitts, was rumoured within the family to have had some Jamaican mixed race ancestry. Author Julia Markus suggests St Kitts rather than Jamaica.[4][5] Evidence is inconclusive.[6] Robert's father, a literary collector, amassed a library of around 6,000 books, many of them rare. Thus, Robert was raised in a household of significant literary resources. His mother, to whom he was very close, was a devout nonconformist and a talented musician.[1] His younger sister, Sarianna, also gifted, became her brother's companion in his later years, after the death of his wife in 1861. His father encouraged his children's interest in literature and the arts.[1]
By twelve, Browning had written a book of poetry which he later destroyed when no publisher could be found. After being at one or two private schools, and showing an insuperable dislike of school life, he was educated at home by a tutor via the resources of his father's extensive library.[1] By the age of fourteen he was fluent in French, Greek, Italian and Latin. He became a great admirer of the Romantic poets, especially Shelley. Following the precedent of Shelley, Browning became an atheist and vegetarian, both of which he gave up later. At the age of sixteen, he studied Greek at University College London but left after his first year.[1] His parents' staunch evangelical faith prevented his studying at either Oxford or Cambridge University, both then open only to members of the Church of England.[1] He had inherited substantial musical ability through his mother, and composed arrangements of various songs. He refused a formal career and ignored his parents' remonstrations, dedicating himself to poetry. He stayed at home until the age of 34, financially dependent on his family until his marriage. True story
This happened to me one day back in 1970
Being a football fan (Celtic) in Scotland it was
Regular evry
Saturday to go to games home
And a way we would meet up in the pub waiting for the hired bus to take us to the
game all decked out in our football colours
(green and white) we would have a few drinks
Beer whisky talk about the teams about things
Up and coming things we had done the week before usual patter this particular Saturday was the old firm Darby rangers v Celtic at ibrox park Glasgow always tickets for these
Games now and getting a ticket was hard to
Get but we always managed to get one so to get back to the pub! At this stage we were sort
Outcasts at the time we had all been members
Of our local supporters club but things had not
Been good with some of us there was no drinking ban on the buses at that time and we
Were young so we would bring carry outs onto the bus and you can imagine it stop the bus
We need a piss this did not go down to well
With the older ones on the bus especially when it happened three or four times on route
To the games there would be arguments sometimes a wee fight would break out (ah great days!!!) there was a meeting called in the church hall and a few of the lads decided
To go on threr own me being one of them
Which meant we would have to hire our own
Bus we were then known as the rebel bus the
Name stuck to us and I suppose we were a bit
Rebelious at the time we got into a lot of a troublefew of us would get lifted by the police now and again barred from a few pubs
Fights were regular in them days they say that
The drink was the cause of most trouble not
True hatred was the trouble still is to this day
Catholic and prodesants that is the cause
Anyway to get back to that Saturday the old firm game we had hired a mini bus a firm in a place called kilsyth not far away from us in my home town Denny get this the firm from kisyth
Had bought some mini buses from a mental
Hospital in larbert near falkirk well known
Hospital so that was that we would get the
People in the pubs saying bus from nutters
For nutters took a lot of stick we did but we did not care as long as we got to the game so when the mini bus turned up to take us to the game we could not believe it all green twenty
Seater all wooden seats hard as well they were all out the pubs to see the nutters mini bus so of we go after a bit of stick about the
Bus nearly a fight broke out every one in the mini bus had a carry out the singing started
Two miles up the road stopped the bus pub
For a pint or two meet some other fans usual
Thing (alesters bar denloanhead) then back onto the bus by this time we were well on as you say with the drink none of the fans in the mini bus were paying no attention me included
To where we were going the singing the drinking was going great guns sweeps for the
Game pick a player to score the first goal out
Of the hat can't do that now a days numbers
Are all over the place one to a hundred back
Then in my day it was one to elven and you would put the ref in as well many a sweep I won great stuff So there we are going along
The road not noticing anything wrong to be honest about it we were all pissed anyway
Then one of the lads said there are a lot of
Rangers supporters going about here so the usual thing was you would start giving them the fingers roaring abuse at them but it just dawned on me there was no Celtic supporters
To be see anywhere we were in the heart of govern apache country ( rangers supporters
Evreywhere). Next thing the bus was caught
In the traffic the Huns ( rangers suporters)
Were all around us the mini bus was covered
In spittings you could not see out the windows
Next thing bottles cans bricks being thrown at
The bus we were lucky no windows were broken the traffic would move on then stop again the bus took a hammering the rangers
Supporters were trying to get in the door at the
Front and drivers side I remember putting my back to the boor the force of the door being
Banged was awful this went on for ages it did sober me up I can tell you bus moved on again the rangers fans were running after us
We got caught in traffic again rangers fans
Were on us again on the roof battering windows and doors driver was going nuts
He was shitting him self he even left his seat
Get back in that fucking seat you stupid bastard next thing police turned up I was never
So glad to see the police in my life rangers
Supported still throwing bottles at the bus police had to send for more polce that was
Bad we were stopped in the middle of the
Road bus being battered even the police were
In trouble I remember saying to one of my pals don't you open that fucking door took ages for the police to get it sorted out When they did I can remember police officer talking
To our driver who by the way was a rangers supporter why did you bring this bus of Celtic supporters into this area did you not know this
Was rangers territory. Don't know what the driver said he was shitting it so we got escorted by the police to ibrox park boy it was
Some experience I would not like to go through that again and the game was a cracker Celtic won one Nile Joe Craig what
A goal what a day tell you this that driver
Was very lucky he did not get hammering
Back in the pub when I told the story people
Could not believe it and the nutter bus well
Took more stick about that as well
I have been away from scotland twenty odd
Years but they still talk about it yet
