Die Ethnizität ist ein ethnologischer Begriff. Darum vorher die Frage, was Ethnologie eigentlich ist. Die Ethnologie setzt sich laut Wörterbuch aus den griechischen Wörtern „Ethnos“ für „Volk“ und „Logos“ für „Kunde“ zusammen. Die Ethnologie ist also eine Wissenschaft von den Völkern. Dabei werden im Weiteren alle sozialanthropologischen Fächer in diesen Begriff miteinbezogen. Sozialanthropologisch meint in dem Fall, dass man sich mit dem Menschen als sozialem Wesen beschäftigt. Ethnologie als „Völkerlehre“ ist, wie viele Wissenschaften, stets im Wandel darüber begriffen, was genau Untersuchungsgegenstand ist und was nicht mehr, oder mit welchen Methoden der Untersuchungsgegenstand zu untersuchen ist. Ein vergleichbarer Wandel wie er auch in der jungen ur- und frühgeschichtlichen Archäologie stattfand. Diese machte auch früher gerne Aussagen über Volkszugehörigkeit von Funden.
