I'm also dyslexic and have been writing for years, but I write for myself. I still get things wrong and use the spell checker in Word and Grammarly that this site uses. Look at my profile and at my books, you will see they have been read and some have been flagged as favourites, even with misspelt or wrongly used words. So my friend don't beat yourself up just write and enjoy, others will enjoy your work as well, Henry J Macey.

Hey, thank you for the reply. I will definitely have a look at some of your work. I'm a bit of a perfectionist but i think Im going to just write it all and then go over and edit once it's all finished.

As writers we tend to step into one puddle of quicksand or another - like the okay-I'm-working-on-this-but-I-just-got-a-great-idea-for-a-new-story puddle, or the there-are-too-many-directions-this-story-can-take-and-I-can't-choose-right-now puddle. Then there's the good old oh-no-writer's-block-attack puddle. And sometimes, we just don't feel like writing that day.

The initial statement is interesting, but while you make some great observations about advertising, you also miss a lot. For instance, advertisers aren't always focused on what's popular, but on making something popular that is not. You also haven't seen enough American commercials if you dismiss the importance of family here. Most of our ads deal with family-centric products and their use. It's entirely possible that our advertisers don't show those in the Asian countries, which is why someone living there might get that "ego-oriented living" impression.

As an American citizen, I find less of that kind of thing addressed in ads and more in day-to-day attitudes among the younger segments of our population. Keep in mind, we get a great deal of ads from Asian countries as well, and nearly all of them are targeted toward ego: cosmetics, fashion, faster ways to get out of the kitchen, a massive amount of ads devoted to fingernail art, etc. Were I to assume those ads also ran in the Asian countries, I might conclude that THOSE places are more about ego than family.

In order to give a fair overview of how ad campaigns reflect a country's ethos, be sure you do deeper research into what the citizens of those countries see, and not just what they send to other countries. Ask people who live there, perhaps. I'm pretty sure people in China care a lot less about expensive, runway-worthy fashions for day-to-day living than the ads we see here from China would indicate, or that the citizens of Japan don't spend every waking moment reading Manga while dancing in the streets to J-pop, yet that's pretty much the gist of the ads we see here from them.

Advertisers are constantly seeking to expand the market for the companies they represent, and send what they believe will appeal to other cultures to those countries' screens and publications. I worked in marketing with some of the top advertising agencies in New York and saw first-hand how it works in the global marketplace. It's a fascinating study, and your teacher was smart to have you delve into it.

So good start. Just do a little more research to help you form a more three-dimensional opinion.

Thank you - for the welcome, and for being okay with my advice. I'm glad you didn't think I was being unnecessarily harsh, lol. I like that they give you such thought-provoking assignments!

Focus on the plot and what you want to happen in the story.

I started reading your story, but found the lack of paragraphs in the dialogue was distracting from the flow. The dialogue itself is fine and realistic, but when you don't separate each speaker's words by a paragraph break, the reader has to keep re-reading it to correctly assign the words to the right speaker.

A good way to learn how to paragraph your dialogue is to look at books by known authors in your genre. You'll see that there are no page-length paragraphs, and that each speaker is designated by a new one, as are changes in thought. Here's an example, using your own story:

"Wake up", Grams whispered as she shook Blair in attempt to wake her. "Wake up, Blair," Grams said with much more intent and a firm tone of voice.

Blair glanced over at the clock to see that it was 3:00am. Blair jumped up from her bed and could hear the panic in her Grams' voice and see the fear in her eyes. "What is it, Grams? What's going on? Are you okay?"

Blair asked so many questions in confusion, Grams grabbed and pushed her down into a corner and placed a finger over her lips gesturing for her to be quiet.

Blair just couldn't understand what caused her Grams to be so fearful and why they couldn't speak loudly. "Grams, talk to me, you're scaring me?" Blair screamed out to her Grams.

Grams hurriedly placed her hands over her mouth. "Blair, I thought they would never find you!, I thought I could protect you from your past, whatever you do, don't trust the society. I should have told you about who you truly are and prepared you, I'm so sorry my sweet Blair." Grams hugged and kissed Blair on the forehead.

Blair looked into her gram's eyes and couldn't help but feel like this was the last time she would ever see her grams.

By breaking up the dialogue into paragraphs specific to each speaker, it becomes a lot clearer who is saying what. Making this simple change will improve both the look and readability of your story, which in turn will attract more readers. The other minor mistakes are just those that are common to newer writers, and are easily fixed. Start with the paragraph issue, and then you can edit the other things.

Writing a good story means more than just putting words out there. It takes some work, but in the end, it's totally worth the effort.
