Gah!!! Why am I such a perfectionist? An over-thinker? A nitpicker?
So, I keep having to restart my fantasy story because I'll find plot holes, or inconsistencies, or simply a stupid problem with a character's motives, and now I'm starting to doubt the whole story as a whole. Why? WHY?

So, I keep having to restart my fantasy story because I'll find plot holes, or inconsistencies, or simply a stupid problem with a character's motives, and now I'm starting to doubt the whole story as a whole. Why? WHY?
Here's a brief overview:
Eli was born out of wedlock, so he is often regarded as filth/nothing/a lowly person. All he wants is to escape from his current situation, to find a profession and a name for himself, to secure a future that doesn't consist of joining the military like all the other boys coming from poor families.
Nivren is a prince, the son of the younger brother to the King. He hates being royal. His uncle (the King) only had a daughter before his wife died, so the last heir to the throne is Nivren. The crown is his, but he doesn't want it. He wants to escape from HIS current situation as well. So he runs away from home.
Now's where I have the problem. I have these characters fully developed in my head, but I don't know how to weave it into a coherent story.
What I want to do is somehow have them meet and travel together, but then their motives come into question.
Eli's motives are easy; he would want to travel with this man that he doesn't know so that he can get away from Sáffrodil (his hometown). But Nivren . . . his motives are much harder to figure out. He ran away from home, but I need to find out what his plans are from there, and let's say that he DOES somehow bump into Eli (the way I originally had it in the book was that he was passing through Sáffrodil), but then how could Eli ever convince this prince that it would be a good idea for him to take the boy with him? Especially if the King's soldiers are pursuing him? Wouldn't two people travel much slower than one?
That's one big part of my predicament.
The other part is: As I was rewriting (again), Eli's caretaker, Joriff was discussing with his wife whether to take Eli with him to Bylia (the capitol) for the Festival of Lights where he would sell his clocks. There they could be rid of the boy, as they don't want the burden of having to care for him any longer. Anyway, Eli has this whole thought process going on in his head that he doesn't want to end up in the military, and if he goes to Bylia, he'll most likely be forced into recruitment. But also, he is curious to see the city, and there's still a chance that he won't have to become a soldier. Besides, it's not as if he ever really had a choice in the matter anyway; a job is a job after all.
Yet, if I go that route, then Nivren wouldn't run into him, or at least not until much later, and the rest of the story would fall apart.
As well as that, in my first draft, Nivren was searching for an apprentice so he wouldn't have to become king, but then I ran into the problem of finding what profession Nivren would have in the first place, and what the purpose of a Prince (at the time, duke) searching for a job would be. The whole idea fell flat and was regarded as stupid.
So here I am again, asking for help to piece together the puzzle of my brain. *sigh* It is such a struggle.

Publishing is a dream, but writing is a huge part of my life just because it's awesome Bookrix.com is awesome, because then I get recognized without paying for it.

Ummmm, well my name is Josh. I began writing (I believe) in the fifth grade. I have two siblings, and my favorite childhood pet (who I still have) is my cat. My least favorite part about writing is probably when my computer crashes, because I don't really care for writing in a notebook, or on paper. Having kids is on the horizon, but at no time soon. I don't know how many I want. Both Geometry and Algebra were pretty easy. My favorite cartoon is probably Luny Toons, or the original episodes of spongebob. I don't really have a favorite shirt. As long as it covers my back, I'm, pretty much set. Of course I wish to get published! That would be amazing! But it is also fun to just write, and show the stories to your friends (especially if they like it).
