I respect this young man for taking the ti e to be thoughtful about this
issue, but I would encourage to invest more time in thinking more deeply. Many
mass killers do not slaughter innocent people because they are ""seeking
help"". They do it because they harbor intense hatred, rage, and prejudice
against a perceived enemy, and thus justify their actions. Guns may not be the
problem, but easy access to them is. One need only review the statistics
regarding gun deaths in various countries, let alone mass killings by guns, to
see the obvious equation.
While the second amendment protects the right to gun ownership, it does so
pursuant to a ""well-regulated militia"". There is absolutely no justification
for anyone to own an arsenal of firearms, much less military grade assault
weapons. Thorough background checks, along with a delay of at least 30 days
before the sale can be consumated, should be without question at this point. I
have no problem with one owning a hunting rifle, perhaps even two, but I think
it is absurd for people to be able to buy guns in a parking lot, and to have
access to handguns and automatic weapons.
Until our congress decides to reject NRA money and threats we had better be
well-stocked with ""thoughts and prayers"
