I work as an attorney for a large law enforcement agency. What I do not
understand is why these officers are not prosecuted for perjury if they
actually lie while under oath or swear to the truth of a false statement in an
affidavit. Our agency has fired officers for intentionally lying on case
reports. Any officer who ""stretches"" the truth is perverting the justice
system and putting any subsequent conviction in jeopardy if it comes to light
after the fact. Moreover, the officer is violating his or her oath of office
and placing thousands of clean officer at risk due to the taint that place in
the minds of the public. When I used to teach arrest, search, and seizure to
recruits, I consistently reminded them that the most important things to be an
effective officer is honesty and commonsense.
