I made a midlife career change when my husband died at 51 and I had a son who
had just started college, returning to college myself to earn an advanced
degree. Now with the finish line in sight, I realize I have no interest in
retirement. It was difficult to find employment after graduation. Many
businesses are not interested in hiring anyone over 30. And I realized I was
not interested in working a steady 9:00 - 5:00, and have instead found
flexibility in college teaching and research. I have no intention of slowing
down anytime soon. I plan to work until my brain no longer functions. Work
supplies social connections, a sense of purpose, and problem-solving, to say
nothing of the financial gain. Why would I give that up?
